Valentine's Day, celebrated annually on February 14th, is a day dedicated to expressing love for significant others, friends, and family. We celebrate with loved ones, often exchanging gifts as a token of affection and acknowledgement of the day.
According to realsimple.com, Some historians think that the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia is where it all began. Lupercalia was a celebration of fertility and the arrival of spring that took place every year on February 15. There was animal sacrifice, a great deal of intoxicated celebration, and perhaps a custom where men and women were paired off by selecting names from a jar. Pagan rituals became less popular as Christianity grew in popularity. The event was banned by Pope Gelasius I near the end of the fifth century AD. There is no concrete evidence to support the claim that he replaced it with St. Valentine's Day, a holy feast day. In any case, the wild Lupercalia lost ground to the Christian feast.
As someone who loves to celebrate, February is a month overflowing with love, but let's remember that every day is an opportunity to show love. As we say (in unison), "Araw-araw may pagmamahal!"
